| Department of Nephrology, Xinqiao Hospital, the Third Military Medical University (TMMU), was founded in 1970. It is one of the earliest established departments of Nephrology in China. It was authorized to confer master's degree by the State Council in 1985. In 1988, Department of Nephrology and Department of Urinary were united to set up the center of renal disease of the TMMU. It was accredited as a kidney disease center of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) and the kidney disease institute of Chongqing City in 2000. The center has many well-known specialists. it contains 3 professors, 2 associate professors, 4 lecturers and 3 residents. Among them, one is working on clinical post-doctoral station, 4 had got the doctor degree and 6 had got the master degree. Among the nurses in the Department of Nephrology, 6 were lecturers, 1 had got master degree, 4 had got bachelor degree. And all the nurses had received the formal training in university and had mastered better basic theory and nursing skills.
The Department of Nephrology is divided into four parts: usual ward, ICU, blood purifying center and research lab. The area is about 3000m2. It has 57 equipments which total price were 8 million RMB, including 30 Hemodialysis machines, 2 hemofiltration machines, 1 CRRT mechine, 1 peritoneal dialysis machine, etc. the Department of Nephrology has more than 80 hospital beds. The patients which were accepted regular therapy in the Department of Nephrology was over 1100 patients Every year.
First Plate-form Hemodialysis machine in our country had been designed, investigated and produced by ourself in early 70th of the 20 century. On the backgrond of animal experimental, it was succeed to use in clinic and save many patients of renal failure in 1975. Since 1980, continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis（CAPD）has been developed. This technique was only later four years than abroad. The department presided to convoke the first assembly peritoneal dialysis conference in 1986.
In recent 30 years, diagnosis and therapy level of kidney disease has advanced in the army and all over the country by our efforts. Firstly, a series of new diagnosis techniques such as the technique of renal biopsy have been developed by a great many excellent medical workers and risen the correct rate of diagnosis. Secondly, In the therapy of renal disease, we have special skills in the treatment of nephrotic syndrome, acute nephritis, chronic nephritis and system disease with renal impairment. Thirdly, the first aid of various kinds of poison has advanced in our country. The last, quantity, denomination and quality of blood purification are first in the southwest of China. Owing to these, our department has won many awards, honors and prizes at national and the army levels.
